To receive a B.S. in nanoengineering, students must complete 137 units of coursework required for the major, plus all college general education requirements. (Example: Warren students must take 48 units of general education coursework in addition to the 137 units of major requirements for a total of 185 units for graduation)
Every NENG course (except NENG-004 and NENG-199) must be taken for a letter grade. All courses must have a grade of C- or above as a passing grade. This includes all lower division Math, Physics, Biology and Chemistry courses that are part of the major requirements.
Course descriptions for core classes can be found here.
General education requirements (varied units):
This requirement is intended to fulfill the general education requirements (G.E.) from respective colleges.
Basic sciences and mathematics (sixty units):
This lower-division requirement includes twenty-four units of mathematics (MATH-020A-E and MATH-018 (formerly MATH-020F)), sixteen units of physics (PHYS-002A–D), sixteen units of chemistry (CHEM-006A–C, 007L), and four units of biology (BILD-001).
Engineering preparation (twelve units):
This requirement covers basics in computer programming, circuit analysis and circuits lab (NENG-015, 107, and 108).
NanoEngineering core (forty-seven units):
This requirement constitutes a one-unit seminar (NENG-004) and nine core courses (NENG-011, 020L, 102, 104, 110, 111,112, 115L, 117, 119, 120A, 120B, and 148).
NanoEngineering electives (twenty units):
The five elective courses requirement must be chosen from among the upper-division NENG courses offered by the department (NENG courses numbered 100 through 199). Students may petition to use other upper division courses, such as CENG, BENG, MAE, ECE, to fulfill the NanoEngineering Elective requirements, but petitions must be submitted prior to booking as approval is not guaranteed. Petitions for potential elective courses can be submitted up to two quarters in advance. Additional information can be found here on the petitions section of our website.
